Switching to Mastodon - #DeleteFacebook

#1

I hope everyone is aware of the Facebook-Analytica issue happened 2 weeks ago. We have been always into discussions on alternatives such as Diaspora, Scuttlebutt, Mastodon, etc. Issues like this remind us of the need for the building a strong alternative network parallel while we gather the mass and address them through Facebook, Twitter, etc. Let’s strengthen the alternatives and take this to the people exactly at the time when they look for it. Many of us here are already there in Mastodon and we need a lot more to get involved. Join an Instance in the Fediverse.

I’ve been running a self-hosted instance of GNU Social (inter-operates with Mastodon) for more than 2 years now.

When we say #Switch to Mastodon, it is also important to talk about #Federation, #Decentralization, Self Hosting along with it. Otherwise, it repeats one of the purpose for which we are switching. There are various #Mastodon instances that we can join relating to our interest and the community that we can pitch in.

Failing to do so, will repeat the “One Down, All Fall” scenario within the #Alternatives too. This has recently happened with #Matrix and our entire community in #Riot went down for a day.

So the next time, when someone talk about switching to Mastodon to a #Beginner talk about the availability of various instances and make her choose one.

Also when we talk about fediverse, let us also not restrict ourselves only with one project like mastodon. there are other projects too. The goal of federation and decentralization is to put us back in control of our digital lives and data while also the freedom to choose from diverse projects to get into fediverse.

Therefore, instead of sharing https://instances.social I would share https://the-federation.info which gives a much larger picture.

by the way, Free Software Movement of India (FSMI) has also launched a pleroma instance to join fediverse and can be accessed at https://fsmi.social and from Pondicherry we have been running a pleroma instance https://connect.fshm.in

Twitter banned a account of Senior Supreme Court Lawyer Sanjay Hedge recently and Twitter users from India are imposing a 24 hour ban on Twitter by logging out of twitter and migrating to Fediverse platforms like Mastodon, Pleroma, etc., Mastodon.social, mstdn.social instances see a huge spike in new users.

Few celebrities like Kannan Gopinathan (IAS officer who resigned citing the lack of freedom to function under current govt.), James Wilson, Meghnad who have huge followers base in Twitter took a bold decision to migrate to Mastodon as an alternative platform.

As they join, new members are also flocking along with them and they are learning about the idea of federation and decentralization on their own. This is hugely a positive sign.

I read the book “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport recently and highly recommend it. I have confirmed my long standing suspicion that even free software federated social networks like GNU Social, Mastodon, Diaspora, etc. are detrimental to mental health. While Facebook’s addictive anti-features were created in the interest of profit, anti-features exist in free software such as Mastodon because they are clones of equivalent proprietary software such as Facebook. Therefore, I may not return to the fediverse. If I do return, I may not be a very active user.

I completely agree with you on this and share the same opinion. People looking for alternatives are also expecting the same from such free software alternatives. We need a paradigm shift, a cultural shift in how and what for we depend on such social networks.

Lately, i have started to appreciate using off-the-grid, less noisy communication mediums like Manyverse. Though they also provide room for becoming noisy, it’s upto us to decide. i consciously don’t connect with any external servers.

Thanks for referring this book. I will read. By the way, can you check the hyperlink for the book, is it correct?

By the way, can you also write a review on this book and post it under #books-documentaries category? We could share it widely.

My bad. Fixed the link. You should fix it in your quoted text too.

Will do.
